wtfBBQ 22Nov05 He's back!

Rumors of my death are only mildly exaggerated; it's called grad school, get over it!

Paul Warner gives thanks this holiday season that he knows me. (Smith's Olde Bar 12/6/05) But remember PodpornAlley? That was a great song. Mmmmm porn.

Beau Hall hits closer to home with "Can I Get Some Lovin'" (playing Front Page News 12/10/05), kicking off a voicemail extravaganza! Yes, I loves my women crazy-like. Craziness abounds.

If you suspected this podcast's motto is All Luigi All The Time, you might be correct. "Good Intentions" from their new CD; go buy it. (See them 12/10/05 @ Drunken Unicorn)

Tremendously dull life/dissertation update. Sorry. I was tipsy. Fellow podcaster over at Cup O' Joe looks like he's about to make the same mistake I did. Don't do it! Oh well.

Parade opened for Luigi's CD release show, and I hope the fact that they may be my new favorite band (sorry Luigi, you're so yesterday) makes up for the fact I didn't ask their permission to play "Questions." (Also 12/10/05 @ Drunken Unicorn)

Luke Wyatt plays some angry techno while I complain about Comcast, who took 2 weeks to fix my internet. COMCAST SUCKS. (Sorry about banging on the microphone, I was angry.)

Holy crap, more music! The Gates of Berlin "Shake Me" and play 12/5/05 at Smith's Olde Bar.

Finally, go back and listen to the Terminal Degree episode if you didn't catch it the first time, it represented a high point of podcasting. If you want to help keep this show more regular, EMAIL ME suggestions for show topics, things to go record, people to interview, bands to play. I can find the time to do this, I just lack the inspiration.

Podosphere discovers new stupidity

As we speak, the podosphere is experiencing HISTORY IN THE MAKING! The first ever worldwide simulpodcast of Chance & the Choir's live concert is underway.

Okay, there's so much wrong with that statement it elicits a sad chuckle from the cockles of my ironic heart. Now, let me issue a disclaimer before I keep bitching -- I like Chance, I really do. He's a good musician and he's been great for the whole music podcasting community. His website is as fun as his music and the level of audience participation he generates is outstanding.

That being said, the whole notion of a "simulpodcast" is pretty freaking stupid. First of all, it's not really happening "as we speak," first and foremost because you probably won't read this until hours and hours after I type it. The internet is rarely "live." Secondly, the music itself isn't even happening "as I type" with the exception of 5 streaming internet radio stations. To the extent that Chance's concert is in fact being "broadcast" simultaneously so that all of the fans of 5 net stations hear it at once, that is pretty cool (unless you don't like Chance & the Choir). But the other 33 purveyors of this event? NOT live. Sure, about half an hour ago, 33 podcasters clicked "Publish" and updated their RSS feeds to point all of our podcatchers toward 33 copies of almost the exact same goddamn file.

The trick is, hardly anyone is listening. This isn't a simulpodcast, this is hardly even a simul-download. I get far fewer pings to my feed on weekends because lots of subscribers have let their computers go to sleep while they go enjoy the 3-D world out of doors. When they log on again before bed, or before work tomorrow, their computers will happily download the concert, but I for one won't get around to listening to it until at least Wednesday. To put it in super-dorky terms, I bet that if we assume most people listen to weekly podcasts, then the time at which people actually listen to this "simulpodcast" will have a distribution that looks rather like a Weibull or maybe lognormal, with its peak probability density sometime between Monday evening and Tuesday afternoon. Don't ask where I got that idea, it smells a lot like my ass.

The true defect of the "simulpodcast" concept is its waste of bandwidth and disk space. It makes a helluva lotta sense for Chance, as he doesn't have to foot the bill for distributing that much data to the collective audience of the 33 podcasts. (I notice that on the front page of his site right now, you can get to all the podcasts but there's no place to download the show directly from him.) But for the listening audience, it's pretty annoying. I don't really listen to many music shows anymore, save ones like DDR which, like the wtfBBQ, has a funny story or two in the mix with the music. But when I did, I listened to bandtrax.net, Insomnia Radio, The Tartan Podcast, De-Fi Radio, and Accident Hash. Congratulations, podosphere, your average listener like me will now have FIVE COPIES of the same damn concert. This is particularly silly in the case of The Tartan Podcast, which I subscribed to so that I might hear music from, oh, say....SCOTLAND.

Alright. Back to your business.

Not dead yet

It seems that some of you actually care, and that is indeed touching. I've been under the serious gun at school, trying to get to a critical milestone in my long, slow crawl over razor blades toward a dissertation. (Those of you who are new-ish and haven't yet heard it, I recommend the Terminal Degree episode to get a flavor of this joyous pursuit.)

I should be recording a new, drunken episode Tuesday night after I survive a presentation I'm preparing to give Tuesday morning. Thanks for your patience.

wtfBBQ 02Sep05 Katrina blows

SPECIAL RELIEF EPISODE!

I read on Podcrawl that there's a call to all podcasters to help out in our own special way, and this is mine. Here are some mo' funner musical ways YOU can help out with Katrina relief.

BENEFIT SHOWS IN ATLANTA!
Tonight, Sept. 02: Singer/songwriter night at Smith's Olde Bar, bring a can of food for $1 off admission.

Tomorrow, Sept. 03: Blackfire Revelation at The EARL. This band is from New Orleans and has no place to go, no homes left. Go see their show and put money in the bucket. Also back in Atlanta next Friday the 9th at Star Bar. Really good mellow but hard rock.

Weak Lazy Liar at Eddie's Attic tomorrow night, donating all proceeds to relief efforts. Described as "heavy metal folk music" and very delicious.

Sunday, Sept. 04: The Whiskey Fest (thewhiskeyfest.com) at Park Tavern, 4-11pm. 5 tribute bands; get in free (otherwise $10/$15) if you give blood and prove it. Other ways to help there as well, check the website.

OTHER FUN WAYS TO HELP
Chance is donating all proceeds of his online music sales THROUGH LABOR DAY to relief, every red cent. So go buy some tracks (you can buy onesy-twosy tracks or whole albums). Remember him, the Milkshake Song cover guy? Yeah. Rock on.

Atlanta Roller Girls are collecting money to help their sisters in the Big Easy. If you want to donate direct to hot chicks on wheels with no homes, go here.

More later. Gotta go to work. Email me with more news!

OH YEAH, MY CONTRIBUTION: I admit, I have not yet made my donation to Red Cross yet. Here's what YOU can do: I have about 100 subscribers (not random listeners), and was thinking of donating $50 (HEY I'M POOR, OKAY). I'm going to donate fitty cent for every unique download of this episode (and the next Katrina related one); so TELL A FRIEND and drive up my donation, half a buck at a time.

wtfBBQ 28Aug05 Nick Tyler

Having just celebrated a 10 year anniversary of the failed relationship sort, I sit down for a few beers with local novelist Nick Tyler. We talk about his romance-inspired autobiographical fiction, when to tie up your girlfriend, Republicans and the forbidden sex, and it all boils down to some sage advice: "Listen before you fuck."

For gender balance, we hear about Kate's crazy neighbor and Jesus' Atlas; a stalker episode as reenacted by the Big Red Chick.

MUSIC:
The Bonaventure Quartet - "In Lieu of Flowers" and "Blue Rendezvous"
(playing Fernbank Martinis@IMAX 9/16)
Pain - "Midgets with Guns"
Luke Wyatt - "Minneapolis"

Coverage and homage of Atlanta's new roller derby league, the Atlanta Roller Girls! It's pretty self-explanatory, really. Interviews with league founder Tanya Hyde; Roller Girls Lola Lixx, Venus Fly Tramp, Princess Lay-U-Out, Viva Hate, Big Red, Rollerhate; and recruits Hot Wire, just Sara, and just "Karen." Not to mention color commentators the Rev. Uncle Laffo and Rotknee.

wtfBBQ - Announcement

Quick audio post here for the subscribers who don't check the blog too frequently.

The new feed is online! If you're interested in the music-focused monthly "All Songs BBQ'd," featuring songs played as bumpers and soundbeds on the regular show, subscribe to http://www.wtfbarbecue.com/asbbq.xml

New button on the left, even. Neat, huh? You may notice there's no entry for the show here, nor is it in the radio.blog player over there, and you don't know where to click and download the All Songs BBQ'd. Well, tough shit! This is a subscription-only show, for my convenience, AND just to annoy you non-podcatcher users. (It's not that hard to find the .mp3 file's URL, but if you're going to be a pain about this, so am I.) And remember, this is a MONTHLY show, so no need to set your aggregator to ping me every 15 g-damn minutes (though if you use sucky iTunes, you can't set that individually).

Listen to the quick announcement and preview.

iTunes 4.9: Flop.

Okay, the initial razzle dazzle has worn off; color me unimpressed. In fact, color me annoyed. As an Apple aficionado, I've become well accustomed to my love-hate relationship with Apple. They hook me with one feature only to screw me with another.

With iTunes 4.9, the hook is show notes on the iPod. I've gotten comments from people asking about a specific song at a specific point in the show that I didn't identify in a timely fashion. With the latest software, you can hit your select button 3 times and voila! the show notes appear on your screen as you listen. That way you can know instantly that the soundbed after the presidential rant is in fact Rantings of Eva. Instant information. Hawt.

A close second in the cool features list is the automatic conversion of all podcasts to bookmarkable-MP3. Bookmarkable files are a watershed for us longer, ramblier podcasters.

And chapters? A close third. I myself don't know that I'll ever avail myself of chapters, as it's sometimes hard for even me to distinguish one ramble from the next. But in the case of something like The Sounds in my Head, well, as Daniel said, if he's playing something you don't like -- skippity skip. Very handy.

But the major, massive, critical flaw is the way the iPod defaults to listing all your podcasts by artists; unlike your Genre or Playlist menus in the regular music library, there is no option for "All." Thus, each day, if you want to know who's released a new podcast while you slept, you have to select each and every fucking single subscription individually and see if you've already heard all the episodes in there.

iPodderX already gave me the ability to convert all my incoming podcasts to bookmarkable AAC format on the fly. It also allowed me to specify custom playlists for new shows to be uploaded to. I had mine sending some to "Podcasts - News," some to "Podcasts - Music" and some to "Podcasts - Variety." Each of those playlists was sorted in iTunes (and thus on my iPod) by date: oldest first, so I made sure to plow through them in order.

And since all of these files were in my Library, I could also create a smart playlist of any file with the Genre=Podcast (set in iPodderX if it wasn't so already), Date Added = within 2 weeks, and My Rating = 0 stars (thanks to a tip I picked up via Podcrawl -- once you listen to a cast, rate it, and it drops off the New Podcast list at next sync). All of this various sort-by-date action made it very easy for me to tell when I had something new to listen to. In this ridiculous separate Source for all podcasts in iTunes, it's fucking impossible. What retards. YOU SEE, PEOPLE? You see what a good idea it is to have major corporations to barge in and say they know what they're doing? Adam Curry, if you didn't see this massive design flaw coming, you're just as dumb as you fucking look. You should have been screaming at the top of your lungs. But you're too busy getting stoned. Dumbass.

I'm pretty sure I'll be going back to iPodderX within days. I miss the flexibility and control. For those of you who really, really want show notes on your iPod, then iTunes is the thing for you. But for now, to me, that ain't worth it.

Cover art

You know, damnit, one of the things I wanted to do with last week's episode was include some pictures, and I just never got around to it. I thought about just including pictures of events as extra enclosures in the RSS feed (and with the new Feedburner tools, that may happen in the future). However, a simpler way to sneak some pictures onto your machine would just be to use them in cover art. You already know you're listening to wtfBBQ, no need for the self-aggrandizing cover art, no?

So if you feel like the last episode is a keeper and you want to add some album art to it, here's a look at things to come:

ALSO - IMPORTANT NEWS
I have started using Feedburner, as I just mentioned, to generate RSS feeds automatically from this blog -- saves me precious minutes each week. Furthermore, Feedburner will soon be implementing the Apple-specific RSS tags that will enhance the podcast should you choose to subscribe via iTunes -- specifically, the ability to read show notes ON your iPod while you listen (wondering "WTF is this band?"). So BE SURE TO UPDATE your subscription to the new URL. http://feeds.feedburner.com/wtfbarbecue If you're lazy, don't worry just yet. I will copy the new RSS file and upload it to the old URL each week. But that may not last forever.

A few of you have asked about the iTunes podcast directory. I will eventually get listed in it, but I'm in no hurry -- I'd rather let the hype settle down a bit. I like you guys, you were smart enough to find this show and subscribe all by yourself. Who needs those mouth-breathing technophobes who have to be spoon-fed with a simplified iTunes interface! So PLEASE don't submit the show to Apple on my behalf. I'll get around to it. In the meantime, you can still subscribe through iTunes by pasting the new Feedburner feed into the "Subscribe to Podcast" window under the Advanced menu, and I strongly suggest you to do so. The new iTunes automatically converts my simple MP3 file into a BOOKMARKABLE file, which kicks ass. That way, if you are easily distracted and can't make it through a whole episode due to my breakneck topic changes, if you stop listening and come back to it later, you pick up right where you left off. Brilliant!

Steers Beers 'n' Queers

Happy Pride, everyone! Yes, this is a bit late, but get off my ass, it's free.

First up is some good old fashioned Bush-bashing as our President from the state of steers tells us everything's A-OK in Iraq.

Music - Rantings of Eva "Still Holding On" - July 9th @ Smith's Olde Bar
Then, let's recap the fun at Corndogorama 5000 as Traci from j e t t y grabs some balls and gets wet, Arthur doesn't puke up his corndogs, and two skinny guys make some awful "music."
Music - Cadillac Jones (live recording) - July 23 @ The Earl

Take a tour of Atlanta Pride 2005, visiting with some nice Christians, a toy store, a dildo toss, and various drunken revelers.
Music - Trances Arc "Champagne" - July 9 @ Smith's Olde Bar
It all reminds me of a tale about my first friend to come out of the closet. Sort of.
Music - Little Country Giants "Something to be Proud of" - July 5 @ Eddie's Attic

Credits, administrative business, and an extra bonus clip courtesy of NPR's On the Media and thepoorman.net.
Music - The Woggles (live recording) - August 19 @ The Earl

I'm going to take a couple weeks off for a road trip, my birthday, and to shake some podcaster funk. Back with a revived show around July 19th. In the meantime, I'll put out my first All Songs BBQ'd mix, since enough of you responded favorably. It will be on a different RSS feed, which I have yet to invent, so be sure to visit the website!

Music survey

Here's a question for you folks. For those of you inclined to comment or email anyway. As you know, this show straddles that abyss between the music podcasts and the talk podcasts, known as the ever-elusive "variety" genre. Sure, I could just play local Atlanta music, but frankly I don't listen to too many just-music podcasts m'self, and I'm just so goddamn in love with the sound of my own voice.

What if you could have the best of both worlds? That is, if you even want just music. I've been bouncing around the notion of putting out a secondary podcast that's almost exlusively music -- I'd only pop in briefly between tracks to identify the artists -- and maybe even played at a higher quality (i.e. 128kbps, though that's unlikely b/c I feel that if you like the band so damn much you should at least go visit their website...at the very least, 96kbps, still quite listenable). And this would basically consist of the tracks played on the regular show, but in their entirety without me blathering all over them. If there wasn't much music in that episode, maybe I'd throw in a bonus track from the artist(s).

And if you're interested in the music-only bonus show, would you want it each week with the music from that episode? Or how about a once-a-month compilation from the last four shows, sort of an "All Songs BBQ'd" album? Either way, these would be sent out on a different feed, so if you don't want music shows, you don't have to subscribe to them. I'm just trying to gauge interest here.

I'll make it easy with some pre-filled-out email votes (just remember to change the (at) to @):

Yes! Music show! Either weekly or monthly is fine.

Yes! Music show! Monthly is good.

Yes! Music show! Weekly please.

I wouldn't subscribe, don't bother.

Or, of course, feel free to comment.

Corndogorama!

Tonight is the super awesome special fun Corndog-O-Rama episode!

I didn't seem to make the newspaper's cut, so the reporter scared me for nothing - but that's okay, the bloggerettes still think I'm cool. What's not cool is the ridiculous behavior on both sides of the aisle in the House Judiciary Committee. But enough of today's news (and random traffic reports from North Carolina...stupid Florida tourists).

Some of the music you'll hear at Corndog-o-rama at The Earl this weekend includes

The Close - "Hey Fever!"

The Woggles - "Get Down With It" and "I Got a Line on You"

Y-O-U - "Moviekiss" and "Shadows on the Page"

Hope For a Golden Summer - "Malt Liquor"

Jetty - "Instigator"

Telegram - "My Baby"

As cool as Corndogorama is, it ain't no Findley Fair. We get the inside scoop on this historical hippie-infested Atlanta street corner in Little Five Points.

And of course, you can find not only all of the Atlanta-area bands, but ME, at MySpace if you are so inclined.

Public Privacy

Inspired by my recent brush with a reporter, who may or may not want to cover the wtfBBQ podcast in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, tonight's show is about privacy and anonymity -- about which I'm kind of freaking out right now. Podcasters and bloggers are "out there" on the net, but can we expect (or do we even deserve) a little privacy at the same time? Mike Tyson might want to go find some peace and quiet in sub-Saharan Africa while beating some Jesus into the natives, but how much anonymity can a blogger expect? While pondering such things, we hear from

joy wants eternity - excellent podsafe ambient tracks that I knew I would forget to mention at the end fo the show.

Of Montreal with their tracks Hello From Inside a Shell up front and Penelope at the back. They were Amber's pick for tonight, a supergroovy Athens band that won't be back in Georgia for quite some time. And I am sad. But that's okay, because

The Five Foot Flame, JenRae's local pick who brought us our inter-segment bumpers tonight, will be playing at Lenny's on June 24.

My other blogger guests were Mae of Politics 101, Gymno of, well, Gymno, and Daniel Moore of the Atlanta MetBlog. Oh yeah, and the un-linked Big Red Chick.

Of Montreal used to be represented by Kindercore Records. Damn shame what happened there. Thanks to Dan Geller for the nod, and we'll hear from him again later.

Ragan Fox, poet and podcaster smart-mouthed genius, brought us the abortion meme.

Oh yeah, and Mike Tyson beat African converts to Jina na Bwana.

Not feelin' so hot

Howdy hidy ho, folks. This podcaster has either been nippin' too much into the fizzy podcast juice, or hasn't been gettin' enough sleep, or has been stressin' too much at work -- or all of the above. And I'm really actually kinda feelin' like unholy ass right now, like "take a vitamin and sleep for 10 hours" kind of ass, so I don't think there'll be a podcast waiting for you in the morning (I know you're crushed). I'm going to finish this last nip o' fizzy podcast juice while I do a bit more editing of the raw footage I've accumulated this week, but I probably won't be in rantin' spirits till tomorrow, so look for a hump day episode and in the meantime, go check out Extra Super Action Show or something.

Ugh, seriously...not well.... Did you know cigarettes are bad for you? Sheesh.

Attention iPodderX users!

If you are an iPodderX fan (I know I am) and you've upgraded to the new wow-factor Version 3, YOU'RE SCREWED!

Chances are you aren't hearing the show. My last log check shows a ridiculous number of aborted downloads by iPodderX 3.0 in the last couple weeks, and the support forum over there has a lot of complaining podcasters. Seems they have worked out a fix, but we'll see if it works (and you'll have to go get it). So see if you have the Mass Media and the Smoke & Mirrors episodes, you may have to download them manually till they debug your podcatcher.

Stupid programmers.

Smoke and mirrors

Lacking a consistent theme tonight, I try to distract you from the fact that I've no idea what I'm doing with:

I'm online at AIM and Yahoo IM as "wtfbbqdotcom" if you want to say something.

Nillah - courtesy of Two Sheds Music. Nillah is playing Saturday the 11th at Smith's Olde Bar.

Fireworks in Midtown, Beirut. Complete with symphonic car alarms.

GA Smokefree Air Act 2005 - Attempting to protect the health-conscious, so they can eat a 500 fat-gram burger with a side of tots in a clean air environment. It didn't work.

The Unadored open for Dishwalla this Wednesday night at Masquerade.

And I might have said something about voting in there, but I'm not sure. No, no, certainly not.

Mass media

Somehow I got a real burr up my butt this Memorial Day weekend about the worthless crap we are forced to consume because the bulk of us are mouth breathing retards who vote for everything sucky under the sun, like the American Idol and W. I quit bitching long enough to play

Paul Warner, who can also be found at MySpace and somewhere up in Canada (no immediate local show dates). Most excellent selections of Arnold Schwarzeneggar, Crash Collide, and I'm Your Tiger. Damn good.

Jason Harwell, also also at MySpace. Yes, a repeat so soon (I played him 2 weeks ago), but he's playing again this weekend at Eddie's Attic and there's a new track I hadn't heard before.

C'mon, ladies, seriously, you don't find either of these guys as dreamy as that John Mayer poofta?

Penultimately, the man named Chance (surprise, MySpace) scrubs our brains clean with a kickass remake of The Milkshake Song and the sound of his soul dying. I haven't been this amused in weeks.

And finally, I spin a bit of a GarageBand original I felt inspired to compose in honor of so many of my peers at PodcastAlley. If you're just as demented as I hope you are, you can download a pristine copy of PodpornAlley right here. NFSFFW, so consider yourself warned.

Jackie's show

Hey everybody,
Jackie here from South Beach, Florida, and I just wanted to throw a couple of tunes up while Shel's out of town. I've got some time to kill in Atlanta since I had my head way up my ass about what day it is (these things happen when you're "self employed"), so I thought I'd share some tunes from a couple of bands I'll probably go see this week.

On Friday the 27th, if I drink enough Red Bull, there's The Hiss (they also have a MySpace page) playing at The Earl. I think they're going to be among the new "hair bands" of the 21st century, it's just amazing.

And on Saturday the 28th, over at the Red Light Cafe on a little lighter note, some really super folk-rock-bluegrass coming from Seventh Season. Their sound just knocks my little socks off -- I've always been a sucker for a mandolin and accordion. They're working on their first big CD, so check them out, sweetie.

Omigosh and don't forget, Atlanta Jazz Festival this weekend!

Have you tried this MySpace music thing? It's fabulous, seriously. Neatest thing since hard-pack cigarettes. Well okay so that's it, then. Toodles!

This week's episode gets kicked off in the lovely, quiet, relaxing Blue Ridge Mountains...and then finishes up in the city where everything sucks (including my mic EQ -- I don't know what the hell went wrong there but I'm not re-recording it, so deal). I discuss my love-hate relationship with a now-heavily-tourist-infested mountain town (and the irony thereof) which lacks liquor and liberal media. From there I spiral off into liberal Catholics and scary Christians, a mule or two, and finally some local music by Atlanta singer-songwriter Jason Harwell.

Linky-doo:
Jason Harwell is playing at Eddie's Attic on the 23rd and various locations in the southeast as well. We heard "Declaration Song" and "Just Another Run-of-the-Mill Day."

Fox News certainly didn't make much ado of this kinky interview with anti-abortion activist and saved mule-humper Neal Horsley.

Terminal degree

This week's episode looks at some of the soul-searching moments of five graduate students who often find themselves wondering just what the hell they are doing with their lives. Why am I getting a PhD? Have I really accomplished anything? Will it ever matter? Do these boobs help or hinder my career? And why can't I stop crying? Listen in as your host and four women of science take you down the bumpy road and (hopefully) on to better places.

God, that sounds awful cheery for a cynical bastard like me, doesn't it? Well, don't worry, it ain't as warm and fuzzy as Ira Glass...but it's a start.

Sound beds this week:
Radio Cure by Wilco (iTunes)
and from the Atlanta music scene, two amazing duos:
Little More than This by NorthSouth
Mexico by Arlington Priest
Both play regularly in town and branch out all over, so be sure to check out their sites for schedules.

Oh yeah, want to know what a bat biologist does? Check out some videos.

Download this episode (38:20 / 13.5 MB) - she's a big 'un, so I decided against stereo to spare your iPod. Back to normal next week.

Emily Lord

Alright, fine, so I lied! I made a podcast! I know I'm going to regret this at 5am Wednesday as I finish my final paper. But in the meantime, studying and drinking at the same time got me to thinking about Emily Lord's new CD coming out, so I thought I'd share some of it with y'all. Encoded at 128 kbps today so you can get the most out of the samples from her new album.

And that's really it for today. Except that damn it feels good to be a gangsta, thank you Geto Boys.

Please stand by

In deference to finals week and the massive amount of writing I have to do, there shan't be a podcast this week.

I'll be back next Friday, and thank you for your support.

Oh, and furthermore, balls.
